Board of Directors
Jay played Alto Sax in Band 2 from 2001-2005 and has served on the GBA board for the last 6 years. He graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in History and a minor in Music and began teaching at Ropes ISD. Jay’s wife, Coleen, is a teacher at Frenship Middle School and also a Texas Tech graduate. They have two daughters (Jadyn – 6, and Jordyn – 2) who both love Texas Tech and are future Red Raiders.
Cyndy (Herrmann) Porter
Cyndy played horn in Band 1 from 1975-1979 as one of Killion’s Millions and was active in Tau Beta Sigma. Currently, she works with TTU School of Music Director, Bill Ballenger, as the coordinator of the TTU Friends of Music support group. Cyndy was married to Ken Porter, one of the founders of the GBA, and is the proud mother of two daughters, one of whom was also in Goin’ Band.
Treasurer / Webmaster
Chris Brewer was a Band 1 Trombone in 2006-2009, a Bandwagon Driver, and a Life Member of Kappa Kappa Psi. He currently lives in Lubbock with his wife, Kelsey (another Goin’ Band alum), and works as a Senior Network Engineer at CoNetrix. Chris is also a photographer for the Goin’ Band.
Nancy (Owens) Schunke
Nancy (Owens) Schunke was a Band II Trombone from 1988-91 & ’93. She was active in Tau Beta Sigma and served as Corresponding Secretary. Nancy lives in Lubbock with her husband, Richard, who is an employee of Texas Tech and a Tech Alum. She currently teaches chemistry, engineering, and robotics at Coronado High School in Lubbock.
Jonathan Burkhard played trombone in Band 2 from 2002-2003 before becoming section leader in Band 1 from 2004-2005. He graduated from Texas Tech with a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering. He lives in Amarillo, TX with his wife Julia (Band 2 clarinet 2001-2005) and their three children.
Kristen (McDonald) Boulet
Kristen (McDonald) Boulet played the clarinet and was section leader in Band 2 from 1985-1990. She was an active member of both Tau Beta Sigma and Mu Phi Epsilon. She graduated with a degree in Music Education and was a band director in for Lewisville ISD for 10 years. She is currently a performing and educating Artist with Selmer-Paris and a regional Artist with Vadoren, performs with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and has a large clarinet studio in the DFW area. She lives in Roanoke, Texas with her husband, Jim, and their two children, Grace (17, future Red Raider) and Michael (11).
Stephen Bearden was a Trumpet player in the band from 1992-1996. He currently lives in Lubbock with his wife and 2 children. His oldest daughter is a music major at Tech. For the last 10 years has owned & Operated Lubbock Discount Realty.
Justin was in the Goin’ Band from 2000 to 2003, and tuba section leader for Band 1. He currently resides in Levelland, TX (25 miles west of Lubbock) with his wife and 3 sons, and is a band director at Levelland High School.
Hannah (Porter) Ducas
Hannah (Porter) Ducas was a baritone player in Band II from 2007-2010. She currently lives in Frisco and works at Blue Star Sports. She is working on her History Masters and enjoys spending time with her husband, Brian (another Goin’ Band alum), and their dogs, Sadie and Renly.
Erin was a piccolo player in Band 1 from 1998-2000 and again from 2009-2010 while getting another degree. She has bachelor’s degrees in journalism and Spanish and a master’s degree in mass communications, all from Texas Tech. Erin lives in Lubbock with her husband, Elgin (an ex-ZIT and a middle school band director) and their dog, Izzy. She works as the communications coordinator for Lubbock ISD and scares Izzy with her piccolo and flute practice.
Dr. Sarah McKoin
Director of Bands
Dr. Sarah McKoin is the Director of Bands at Texas Tech University and Associate Professor of Music as well as Director of the Wind Ensemble at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina. Dr. McKoin conducts the Texas Tech University Wind Ensemble and teaches all levels of conducting and wind literature.
Dr. Eric Allen
Assistant Director of Bands
Dr. Eric Allen is Assistant Professor of Music and Assistant Director of Bands at Texas Tech University. He serves as conductor of the Texas Tech Symphonic Band, teaches conducting, and teaches courses in music education. He also assists with direction of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland.
